Embrace the Chill: How to Stay Warm During Winter Photo Shoots

Channeling my inner Lorelei Gilmore…

"Everything's magical when it snows, everything looks pretty. The clothes are great. Coats, scarves, gloves, hats."

The winter season brings a magical backdrop for any photoshoot, with its frost-kissed landscapes and soft, diffused light. However, staying warm during winter photo shoots can be a challenge, especially for little kids! In this guide, we'll share valuable tips to help you stay comfortable and get those perfect shots, even in the coldest of settings.

1. Dress in Layers

Layering is the key to staying warm in chilly weather. Start with a moisture-wicking base layer to keep sweat away from the skin. Add an insulating layer like fleece or down for warmth, and top it off with a windproof and waterproof outer shell to protect against the elements. Remember, it's easier to remove layers if you get too warm than to add them if you're cold. For mini sessions, generally they’re short enough that you can avoid all three layers (so you don’t end up feeling like the little brother from A Christmas Story) but base layers are always a good idea.

2. Keep Hands and Feet Warm

Hand warmers are a lifesaver and can be discreetly tucked into pockets or gloves. We try to bring them along to all winter sessions. These are especially good for the toddlers and big kiddos because the novelty of a tiny little warmer is fun.

For your feet, wear insulated, moisture-wicking socks and consider using toe warmers for extra warmth.

3. Don't Forget the Accessories

A warm hat and a scarf can add a nice accessory to your outfit, but they can make a world of difference for your warmth. Opt for materials like wool or fleece that provide excellent insulation.

4. Move Around and Stay Active

We always like to encourage movement to keep blood flowing and maintain body heat. It’s also fun for kiddos to get to take a short break for a little snow stomp or some jumping jacks to generate heat. This not only helps with warmth but can add a natural, candid element to your photos.

With the right preparations, winter photo shoots can be a rewarding and memorable experience. With a little bit of prep, you can not only stay warm but also capture stunning winter wonderland moments. So grab your family, bundle up, and embrace the magic of winter.
