Picture-Perfect Spaces: Prepping Your Home for an In-Home Photo Session

Hosting an in-home photo session offers a unique opportunity to capture genuine moments in your own personal sanctuary. When it comes to newborn sessions, we always say “PLEASE DON’T CLEAN FOR US!” Let’s be honest here, if you saw my house (where I’m not currently dealing with postpartum sleep deprivation, a bleeding hoohaa, a new little baby, and all the everything that comes with birth), you’d understand that I definitely will not judge the cleanliness of your home. I PROMISE! However, if you must, with a little preparation, you can ensure your space is “photo-ready,” to create a backdrop that complements your vision for your session. Here are some practical steps to get your home ready for a memorable in-home photo session.

Declutter and Organize

Start by decluttering and tidying up the areas where you plan to have your photos taken. Clear away any unnecessary items and organize the space to create a clean, uncluttered backdrop. This step sets the foundation for a visually appealing shoot.

The caveat to this is KIDS. They like their things and they like them where they like them. If you’re really concerned about clutter, we’re also always willing to help you move things as need be. There’s also beauty in capturing life as it is. This chapter will not last forever and someday we won’t be tripping on trains and legos. It may not feel uncluttered now, but there is beauty in the chaos.

Consider Lighting

Natural light is a photographer's best friend. Open curtains and blinds to let in as much natural light as possible. If your shoot is scheduled for a time when daylight is limited, we will come prepared with lighting. If it works with your kiddo’s schedules, let’s work towards a time when the light is best in the house (and doesn’t impede on those precious nap times)!

Choose Meaningful Locations

Select the rooms or spaces that hold special significance for you. Whether it's the cozy nook by the window, the living room with a beautiful fireplace, or a serene bedroom, choosing meaningful locations adds a personal touch to your photos.

Set the Mood with Decor and Personal Touches

Consider the mood and style you want to convey in your photos. Use decor elements like throw pillows, blankets, artwork, or fresh flowers to enhance the ambiance. These details add depth and character to your photos, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. Incorporate personal touches that reflect your unique style and personality. Family photos, artwork, or sentimental items can add depth and authenticity to the images. They tell a story and make the space truly your own.

Coordinate Outfits and Colors

If you're planning a family or couple's shoot, coordinate outfits to create a cohesive look. Consider colors that complement each other and the overall aesthetic of your home. This ensures a harmonious visual flow in the photographs.

Allow for Natural Movements

Encourage natural movements and interactions during the shoot. Whether it's a candid conversation, a shared laugh, or a tender moment, allowing natural interactions to unfold results in authentic, heartwarming photographs.

Home is Where the Heart Shines Through

Prepping your home for an in-home photo session is a delightful endeavor that allows you to showcase the beauty and warmth of your personal space. By following these steps, you'll create an environment that sets the stage for genuine moments and captures the essence of your life at home.

Remember, the most important thing is to relax and be yourself. Your home is a reflection of you, and with a little preparation, it will become the perfect backdrop for capturing cherished moments.
